About the book >.>.> Franz Stuck’s swift rise to pre-eminence began in 1889 when he was twenty- six years old. In that year Stuck exhibited for the first time showing three paintings at the Munich Crystal Palace (ill. p.7). For the large-size painting The Guardian of Paradise (ill. p.6) he received a gold medal second class with prize money of 60000 marks approximately ten times the annual earnings of a labourer. Franz von Stuck was the son of a miller and was born in 1863 in the village of Tettenweis. Lower Bavaria. After finishing at secondary school he prevailed upon his parents to support him at the College of Arts and Crafts and then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. From his very first showing in 1889 he achieved remarkable success with the public. In 1892 as one of the founder members of the Munich Secession he joined the artistic avant-garde of the German Reich. The following year he was appointed to a royal professorship. from 1895 he directed the painting class at the renowned Munich Academy of Fine Arts; and in 1905 he was elevated to the aristocracy.
