About the book >.>.> Japanese costumes and the textiles of which they are made represent an important aspect of the traditional arts of Japan. This book examines the innovations in design and technique that produced the splendid robes and costumes during a four-hundred year period (from the 16th through the 19th centuries) considered as the golden age of Japanese costume. Each style and type of costume is presented in the light of the political and social changes that took place during this period. Separate chapters are devoted to different sectors of society – samurai townspeople actors and Buddhist clerics – and the clothing worn by each. The T-shape format of the costume offers a broad flat straight-edged expanse which is virtually transformed into a canvas by Japanese textile artists. Numerous examples lavishly reproduced in color demonstrate this painterly approach to costume design. The superb photographs are accompanied by descriptions of the patterns and the way the costumes were made the design elements and their origins and the meaning and uses of motifs. (MP)
