About the book >.>.> Hieronymus Bosch’s enigmatic pictures fire our imagination and have long been included among the most important works of art in the world’s major museums. Lust happiness pain and suffering are depicted side by side. Fantastic landscapes in which humans animals and fab- ulous creatures live together in paradisiacal har- mony are contrasted with apocalyptic images of fighting air ships and explosions – which some scholars have interpreted as a far-sighted vision of wars to come. Others assumed that the painter was mainly trying to take up a critical position against the Catholic church. Hans Belting avoids interpreting Hieronymus Bosch’s triptych The Garden of Earthly Delights as a heretical masterpiece a personal examination of the church’s dogmas or as an opulent illustra- tion of the Creation. Instead he sees the panels as a painted Utopia reflecting the zeitgeist of the period. He links the work to the humanist theories of Thomas More and Willibald Pirck- heimer and examines the question that Bosch posed: “What would the world have been like without the Fall?” In addition the author deter- mines the secular patron and analyses the intended purpose of the painting.
