About the book >.>.> In Russia the World of Art (Mir iskusstva) is the stuff of legends. It conjures up images of the magazine of the same name published at the turn of the century as well as the artistic association and the exhibitions that they held in Russia. The World of Art has now grown into a common concept uniting painting music the theatre and book design in the minds of connoisseurs of art. As is often the case however the legend tends to eclipse the true essence the true content the true purport of the phenomenon of the World of Art. Perhaps few now remember that such artists as Alexander Benois L?on Bakst Mstislav Dobuzhinsky and Yevgeny Lanceray all began their long professional careers in the World of Art. The names of Kuzma Petrov- Vodkin Mikhail Larionov and Natalia Goncharova now synonymous with the early Russian avant-garde are not generally associated with the World of Art. True they and other representatives of the Russian avant-garde did not linger long on the horizon of the World of Art. For many of them participation in its exhibitions was nothing more than a passing phase a single episode in their artistic bio- graphies. Nevertheless their very presence here is testi- mony to the vast scope and true democratic leanings of this aristocratic association. Declaring themselves to be open towards all art free of national thematic and stylistic borders the theoreticians of the World of Art never once wavered in their stance. (OS)
