About the book >.>.> Apart from the inclusion now of historical references unknown to the authors when the the first edition was published some mine drawings currently housed in the Somerset Record Office are reproduced for the first time. Included is a copy of the 200-year-old Buckingham mine plan now lost formerly in the safekeeping of the Mining Record Office as Plan R27E current SRO reference DD/HSE. This invaluable drawing reproduced as Figure 7. frequently referred to in the narrative is very inaccurate in scale as evidenced by Mike Jones’ valiant computerised attempts to induce it to co-operate with the twenty-first century. Electronic stretching contracting and rotating promotes only the conclusion that 250 years ago many Cornishmen possessed neither a set of map scales nor a north-seeking compass! We shall probably never know for certain whether the original of copy DD/HSE was drawn in the late eighteenth century or from memory at the opening of the nineteenth century; nor whether it or the copy or both were drawn inaccurately. Of whatever age it is an inaccurate mine plan probably produced by senior Buckingham mine captain Sam Grose. Evidence for this is Alfred Jenkin’s letter dated December 1865 appearing at the end of Chapter 5. Pivotal to the Buckingham mine’s history document DD/HSE though grossly inaccurate is a ‘layered” plan providing invaluable geological and mining information (SP)
