About the book >.>.> Similarly our analysis of th interview transcript is our best attempt based on what we remembe having seen or heard or read both ‘in’ the data and outside the data t make sense of what is said. Sometimes we attempt to make this sense making more ‘scientific’ by engaging in elaborate forms of coding and quantifying or following the carefully laid out steps of a particular rec- ognized method or producing elaborate transcription formats that reveal what is really going on. We comfort ourselves with methodic terms like ‘triangulation’ hoping that if the question has been approached from three sides surely the answer is reliable. At the same time we draw on (more or less) sophisticated theoretical concepts to enable us to make sense of what we see and hear theoretical concepts that are in effect refined tools the theorist develops to make sense of his or her observa- tions and experiences. Just as the interviewee is engaged in interpreting and thus constituting his or her world either in telling us about it or in ethnographic research engaging in it in such a way that we can observe it so too we as researchers in collecting and analysing data or in theor izing about it are engaged in interpreting and analysing (Scheurich. 1997). This is so no matter how much we might try to convince our- selves or our audiences that we have got hold of ‘reality’ via the methods we have used. (LL)
