About the book >.>.> Drake’s cousin John Hawkins invited Francis to become captain of one of his ships and so Drake’s seafaring career began. He took over the tenancy of a house near Hyde Park in Plymouth and at the time of the battle against the Armada he occupied a house at the top of Love Street. On 4th July 1569 he married Mary Newman of Saltash but during their married life of fourteen were only together for about nine months. years they Drake is remembered as the first person to have circumnavigated the world. His ship on the voyage of almost three years was the “Pelican” later re- named the “Golden Hind”. On his return he was knighted at Greenwich and purchased Buckland Abbey. Mary died shortly afterwards and Drake later married Elizabeth Sydenham. He became Mayor of Plymouth and the island in Plymouth Sound was named after him. His most famous exploit was the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. Less well-known is his provision of Plymouth’s first channelled water supply gravity-fed from Dartmoor. This is celebrated in the old “FYSHINGE FEASTE” ceremony held annually in summer at Burrator reservoir attended by the Lord Mayor and Corporation. (LL)
