Let me give a trivial example from my own experience if only to indicate my awareness that I may inadvertently have lit a fuse by some of my renderings. In Acts 3:6 the Douay- Rheims version on which I was brought up reads: ‘But Peter said: Silver and gold I have none; but what I have I give thee.’ At quite a young age (certainly less than ten years old by my calculation) I had formed a great love for the cadences of this piece of English. Then they started reading in English Catholic churches from the version of Ronald Knox who produced: ‘Then Peter said to him: Silver and gold are not mine to give; I give thee what I can’ and I can still almost half-a-century later recall how annoyed I was at the translation which is perfectly respectable (Knox was working from the Vulgate not the Greek text) but lacks the rhythms of the older English version.
