About the book >.>.> This is the tenth Nature Photography of the Year book. The winner this year – Antti Leinonen’s bear on the page opposite – is however the eleventh Nature Photograph of the Year. This is because the first was chosen without a competition. Whether the pictures in the competition and this book really are the year’s “best” is another story. The crop is restricted by the fact that the competition is open only to members of the Finnish Nature Photographers’ Society. In addition there are those who neither agree with competitions nor wish to participate in them. Holding a fair competition above all requires a good jury made each year of experienced nature photography experts. This time round the jury comprised the Swedish nature photographer Tore Hagman the Finnish nature photographer Nils Sundberg and journalist Jorma Laurila. The composition of the jury does have an effect on the choice since there can be no truly objective best selection. Thus some years photographs depicting the variety of nature seem to do well while in others it may be so called artistic impressions that have the upper hand. This year the traditional documentary – yet still visually attractive – style seems to be in favour. The experienced photographers at least were able to tell from the composition of the jury which kind of pictures were going to succeed. This of course influenced their choice of entries. Others looked for hints from previous years’ books. Sometimes these approaches pay off others they do not. (SP)
