The essence of the work is 26 plates drawn and engraved by George Brannon which illustrate the scenes principal places and picturesque subjects. The work however is not merely a collection of engravings but contains valuable back- ground information. Included are compre- hensive accounts of the agriculture geology produce population trade and history of the island. The three principal towns Newport Cowes and Ryde and their vicinities are detailed and in a series of general tours of the island the reader is taken to places and buildings of interest. The book’s format thus serves a double purpose being a general guide and a lucid description of the subjects of the engravings. This reprint once again highlights many intriguing facets of the island’s scenery topography and history. (LL)
