About the book >.>.> Early in November 1999 St. Helens Historical Society held the first of a series of ‘informal discussion group meetings. The members present agreed to talk about the shops and businesses that had existed over the years around the village green. A first attempt at writing up this information was made and this was circulated requesting corrections and amendments to all those who had attended the informal’ meeting. This created considerable interest and much useful information was forthcoming. After the meeting I decided to note this information down for the Society archive. Further research followed to supplement the information obtained and to attempt to verify relative facts. I also asked interested persons in the village to talk on the subject of traders and other Historical Society committee members assisted in this pursuit. Resulting from these endeavours this book began to emerge. Only those businesses adjacent to the village green have been included and in order to concentrate on those selling goods as opposed to services the many apartments to let and lodging houses have been excluded. Certain professions eg. doctors have been included but master mariners schoolteachers and similar occupations have been excluded. (LL)
