About the book >.>.> This volume illustrates the history of University College founded by private subscription in 1876 and transformed by royal charter of 1909 into the University of Bristol. The text is drawn primarily from the University’s own archives and those of the City supplemented from the public records from other academic institutions in London Oxford Cambridge and Sheffield and from the archives of the Worshipful Company of Clothworkers. Formal minutes and memoranda are interwoven with correspondence most of the material being printed here for the first time. As well as illustrating routines of administration teaching and discipline the documents show how University College secured its place in the community; how it obtained funding from local and central government; how it united with the Bristol Medical School; how it dealt with copspetition from the Merchant Venturers Technical College and how all these efforts culminated in the granting of university stalas (MP)
