About the book >.>.> During the 18th and 19th centuries life in Britain for working people in particular was closely bound to local conventions and practices rather than the broad national sweep of fashion and events. Speech patterns and dialects architectural design and the use of local materials; types of work dress and recreation as well as material objects of all kinds were made or adapted according to regional codes of practice which characterised the life of a given area. Within regional communities these aspects of life were tightly interwoven to create the taken-for-granted aspects of a world in which peo- ple could achieve a sense of self-identity. So strongly felt were local affiliations to a particular locality that these were often placed ahead of or were synonymous with that of loyalty to the coun- try at large. Self-sufficiency was at the heart of regional life and the use of locally available materials was central to this. For example the availability of free-stone flint or clay was directly reflected in the forms of buildings. The durable free stone built houses of the Cotswolds contrast dramatically with the traditional houses of counties adjoining the region to the North Worcestershire and Herefordshire which have predominantly clay or sandy soils rather than freely available stone. Vernacular houses as a result show a preference there for tim- ber framed buildings in-filled with wattle and daub. (LL)
