About the book >.>.> An important movement of the Japanese avant-garde Gutai was founded shortly after the Second World War in 1954 near Osaka in Ashiya by Jiro Yoshihara and Shozo Shimamoto. French publicist and art critic Michel Tapi? discovered the movement a few years later in 1957 and introduced Gutai to the art world in New York and Turin by presenting them as a group of informal painters. International awareness continued to grow from 1962 onwards as artists John Cage Robert Rauschenberg and Merce Cunningham visited Gutai artists in Japan and recognized the group for their experimental theater music and films. Upon recommendations from Yves Klein and Heinz Mack Dutch ZERO artist Henk Peeters included Gutai in the 1965 Nul exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam with with ephemeral installations. At John Cage’s Black Mountain College in North Carolina Allan Kaprow heard about Gutai from the artist Alfred Leslie. Kaprow saw them as precursors of the Performance Art movement and hence included Gutai in his 1966 publication “Assemblage Environment & Happening”. (LL)
