About the book >.>.> Every now and then and in the increasing hurly-burly of the contemporary art world one is struck by something that one has not seen before that assaults both the head and the gut in a genuinely exciting way. Something that potentially anyway seems to represent an addition to our knowledge of art takes place. It is in other words a kind of making more precise within a given medium here the medium of paint on canvas a precision that seems perfectly to represent the time in which it was made. I had just such a pleasurable experience two summers ago when I saw for the first time a painting by lan Davenport then twenty-two years of age. He was then just out of Goldsmith’s School of Art whose best students now more and more seem to stand for a present renewal of art practise in England something analogous to the position of those students in the late fifties and early sixties at The Royal College who took the art world by storm and changed everything. The painting was in a show organised by these talented students with extraordinary professionalism (nothing wrong in that) in a warehouse in London’s new look East End Docklands. To approach that new world that is gowing up on the fringes of London on a sunny summer’s day resembles nothing less than an approach from afar towards Dallas or Houston. (LL)
