About the book >.>.> It is difficult to imagine an artist whose art is more modest than that of Christen Kobke. Pictures that are small in size with motifs verging on the insignificant and a fairly limited number of them at that. And responsible for them a painter who lived a regular and rather uneventful life without attracting much attention to himself. Despite all this Kobke is one of the very greatest of all Danish artists. With his rare power of observation his exquisite sense of colour and the spirited use of his paintbrush he occupies a special position among the Danish Golden Age painters from the beginning of the 19th century. Nor is that all. His originality reaches far beyond the borders of Denmark. He can measure up to the best of European artists of his day. Connoisseurs of art abroad have come to realise this and outside Denmark K?bke is now represented in something like fifteen museums and galleries in Europe and North America. K?bke’s Danish fame goes back to around the turn of the century since when there has scarcely been anyone who has thought it undeserved. Meanwhile we in Denmark have long viewed his art as a purely Danish affair. It is only with the great interest in his pictures that has arisen over the last ten or fifteen years that we have really been able to over- come our national modesty and see Kobke in his proper (OS)
