About the book >.>.> This is a selection of mad frayed totally normal stories about undone uncelebrated abandoned things. They are spectacular strange problematic hurtful funny ludicrous tales. They tell a bigger messier story rather than one that has been honed or finely crafted. But not the whole story which of course can never be told. On the face of it they are sad stories. Ones that speak of artists long forgotten artworks uncared for and ambitions unrealised. They aren’t the stories that are usually told in a world where success and bombast are prized and the good story repeated. They challenge the idea of progress embedded within western societal structures which asserts that we should constantly strive for something better more streamlined and productive. They refute the diktat that failure should only be viewed as the inevitable fallout of experimentation that ultimately leads to success. In relaying these tales my aim is to move beyond this idea of failure as a potentially generative state and offer a richer more complex narrative that recognises and even celebrates the vulnerability the strangeness and the arbitrariness of artistic endeavour and much of life in general. I write about how art gets made what happens to it and how world affairs personal circumstances and misfortune bump up against dreams and hard graft. There is humour absurdity wit and pathos along with trauma wilfulness and sorrow. This constellational approach acknowledges the frustration of many lives (LL)
