About the book >.>.> The dream was born in March 1945 when with capitulation imminent the Japanese Military Administrator of Occupied Netherlands East Indies set up a body named the Investigating Committee for the Preparation of Indonesia’s Independence. Its fifty-nine members represented all principal and ethnic groups of Java and Madura and included Sukarno and the late Professor Yamin. At a meeting towards the middle of the year Professor Yamin electrified the forty-five year old Sukarno with a precise and grandiose definition of Indonesian aspiration. Yamin visualized no less than an Indonesian Empire-an Alliance of countries in the south-consisting of Indonesia Burma Thailand Vietnam and the Philippines. ‘The Malay Peninsula’ he told the meeting ‘forms the neck of our Archipelago. To unite Malaya and Indonesia will strengthen our position and complete our entity and accord.’ The professor’s words were fervently endorsed by Sukarno. (SP)
