About the book >.>.> In this campaign the Battalion had experiences not unlike those associated with former wars. The reader will find again the sudden call to action before men and equipment had “married up” on arrival; the drama of the refugees even worse than in May 1940-and the inevitable withdrawals wherein heavy losses were incurred. But running through the narrative will again be discerned all those qualities which have established the Rifleman as a fighter of renown and his leaders as men worthy of him. It is clear as one reads through the story how sustained was the work which the Battalion had to do from the moment it arrived in Korea until its relief took place there was little respite day or night or in the extremes of climate which had to be contended with. It contrived to compete with all this and withal to enjoy moments of relaxation with traditional cele- bration as for example Christmas Day 1950 and St. Patrick’s Day in 1951. Mrs. Charley and her team of helpers contributed a great deal with the comforts they despatched so quickly and so efficiently from the Association Headquarters in Belfast. 1 believe that our Unit Commanders will be able to draw on the situations sketched here to assist them in the training of their leaders. The measures which had to be taken and were taken successfully to make the unit really mobile across country of the stiffest character will I think be read with special interest and advantage. I should like to pay special tribute to the Korean Porters for the work they did and the esprit de corps which they developed. The Rifleman was evidently at his very best in looking after them and making them so Rifleminded. (LL)
