About the book >.>.> The Special Air Service was a band of picked men all of them versatile intelligent disciplined and highly trained. Its purpose was the waging of a continual harassing ac- tion deep behind the enemy lines and the extent of its success can be judged by Hitler’s order. D. I. Har- rison tells the story of his own part in the various European actions of the S.A.S. After gruelling but exhilarating training Lt. Harrison’s section was detailed to take part in a night attack on Sicilian shore batteries. This at- tack far exceeded its original pur- pose and the S.A.S. instead of being withdrawn were thrown in for a fur- ther and equally successful attack. The first operation had established the reputation that was to remain with them and precede them wher- ever they went. After a course of parachute train- ing and initiative tests Lt. Harrison and his party were dropped with jeeps near Auxerre in central France. Equipped with armoured jeeps each carrying five Vickers K machine guns and a veritable arsenal of gren- ades and personal weapons and in close contact with the Maquis they toured the countryside devastating German and pro-German troops.
