The under- lying factors in this aggrandizement are not far to seek. They are the same as those responsible for the Museum’s famous collections of American silver and portraits of the Colonial and early Federal periods. We need only consider the place of Boston from its beginning as a center of culture and wealth the pride of its people in their history and in their family descent the instinct of Bostonians-and of New England- ers generally-for preservation. We need only remember that the cultivation of un- wasteful habits has ever been a Yankee virtue and no less characteristic has been the prodigal generosity of the genus. These factors not alone but above others have conspired to deliver to the Museum over the past sixty years a collection of furniture that has few peers. (MP)
