About the book >.>.> The Catholic nun carefully steps over the stones on the beach leading the thin little pony by the bridle. The three-year-old girl in the saddle is beaming with delight as she tells everyone that ‘riding a horse is very very nice’. It is 1946 and the Japanese war is raging in Asia. My parents were caught in Bangkok when the Japanese troops invaded Thailand and ended up in a prisoner-of-war camp. Luckily the camp guards consented to the request of my parents that the children my brother and me be allowed to leave the camp and sent to the nuns in Huahin a small village on the coast. It was there that the nuns trying to keep us busy and away from the ravages of war rented the pony on a daily basis so we could ride on the beach. There is a famous quote saying: ‘Thday is the first day of the rest of my life’. Now sixty-four years later as I think of that little girl on the pony on the beach in South-East Asia I reflect that as age sets in it is important to look for that child within to look for that place where the world is always new and ‘riding a horse is very very nice’.
