About the book >.>.> To move beyond established approaches in anthropology that treat art as a repository of works already complete and available for analysis. Instead our focus was on the creative processes that continually bring these works into being along with the persons in whose lives they are entangled. Extending this same approach to architecture we have shown how both art and architecture may be considered – like anthropology – to be forms of skilled exploratory engagement that shape our environment and the ways it is perceived rather than as collections or artworks or buildings. Similarly we considered writing not as an assembly of words imprinted on the page but as a practice of line making or inscription comparable in this respect to drawing or painting. All such activities entail movement or gesture and our research has documented the relations between these creative movements and the inscriptions they yield. Thus we offered a dynamic approach to understanding the relations between movement and gesture ways of knowing and forms of inscription and description. While the research was interdisciplinary in orientation we placed emphasis on the practice of interdisciplinarity: ways of doing anthropology with other disciplines rather than doing an anthropology of these subjects.
