About the book >.>.> His atmospheric works often combining striking realism and uncanny subtlety. Yet for all his evident skill as a painter and some success during his life Moroni did not embark on a grand career his ambit extended no further than Trent and he died in Albino the town of his birth. Unmentioned by Vasari Moroni’s reputation occupied few until recent decades when the work of scholars and curators returned this little-known master to the public eye Cataloguing the first British show since 1978 to be dedicated to Moroni this book takes as its point of departure work by the artist’s master. Alessandro Bonvicino (called Motetto) as well as paintings produced by Moroni in Moretto’s workshop. The religious aspect of Moroni’s are represented by smaller portraits depicting exemplary individuals or the act of prayer as well as the more imposing paintings and altarpieces required by the Counter Reformation. There are secular portraits too ranging from opulent avistocrats in pearls and furs to affected poets to craftsmen at work. The apparent simplicity of Moroni’s paintings belies a world of intrigue and hidden messages. The authors unlock the stories behind many of the sitters-the romances fashions and feuds of the Lombards immortalised by a painter who worked in the words of Titian from nature. (MP)
