About the book >.>.> The prosecution of Penguin Books the popular British paperback company for the publication in 1960 of Lady Chatterley’s Lover by the novelist D. H. Lawrence was the second of its kind brought under the Obscene Publications Act which Parliament had passed in the previous year. It aroused intense public interest and * the trial with the mass of expert witnesses called by the defence remains the most sensational of its kind since the Act reached the statute book over thirty years ago. Obscene publication originally known as obscene libel has always been a common law offence in Britain and until reinforced by statutory enactments in the nineteenth century had been inter preted in different ways by the courts. In 1824 the Vagrancy Act made it a summary offence that is one triable by magistrates to exhibit obscene prints or other indecent matter in public places; and further statutes passed in the immediately succeeding years penalised the exhibition in shop windows and the sale of obscene or pornographic works by dealers
