About the book >.>.> Founded in 1920 the firm of W.R. Midwinter was initially a very small pottery at Boumes Bank in Bursiem Stoke-on- Trong At first the factory produced only Rockingham teapots but after four years William Robinson Midwinter fleitt sufficiently optimistic to expand his production and moved to the nearty Albion Pottery and soon after acquired another neighbourhood factory producing sanitary ware. With the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 William Midwinter handed the business over to his wife while he served in the Royal Navy. After the war W.R. Midwinter acquired another factory. Stewart Maddock Ltd to increase output and reduce overheads Toilet ware production was phased out and dinner ware introduced in the years before the Second World War. The business must have grown rapidly as the average number of employees in the late 1930s was 700 making it one of the largest in the country at the time. The onset of war once again disrupted production and the payroll was reduced to a minimum and a mere token production maintained. The Ministry of Supply and the Ministry of Aircraft Production then took over a large part of the premises for the duration of the war. William Midwinter’s son Roy returned to the pottery after five year’s service in the R.A.F. eventually becoming managing director. First of all though his father wanted to give him a thorough training and so Roy started by cleaning the factory with a team of labourers. He then worked in each department for several weeks to learn all aspects of production which he had previously studied at Stoke-on-Trent College. After spending three years with the works management his father moved him into sales. (LL)
