About the book >.>.> We have retained the general arrangement of the English Hymnal based chiefly on the Church’s year and her sacramental life. In a book whose primary purpose is to be an accompaniment to the liturgy there was no reason to do otherwise; but an important caveat should be borne in mind. If a hymn is placed say in Advent or Passiontide that does not necessarily imply that it is unsuitable for use at other times. This will be apparent to those who consult the list of suggested hymns for Sundays and other holy days which we have provided. In the book as a whole we have tried to include most of the great classic hymns in common use as well as more recent hymns which have established themselves. We have also admitted a few new ones which have yet to stand the test of use. Where a well-known hymn has become wedded to a particular tune we have provided that tune sometimes giving as an alternative the tune to which it was set in the English Hymnal; but tunes in the 1933 edition which have been little used are mostly omitted. Very occasionally on the ground of widespread use in some parishes we have admitted hymns. (SP)
