About the book >.>.> Ruth Bissell Ebright was born September 25 1884 in Akron Ohio the first child of Dr. Leonidas S. Ebright and Julia Bissell Ebright. From her parents Ruth inherited family quilts which were to be an enduring love of hers. She also inherited her father’s fas- cination with politics and her mother’s pride in family history. Leon- idus was a surgeon who served as surgeon general of Ohio a state representative and Akron’s postmaster. Julia was descended from the Bissells of Connecticut a family with 17th-century colonial roots and two state governors in the family tree. Julia was born in Ohio but her father’s Connecticut ancestry was important to her and her daughters Ruth and Mary. The Ebrights married late; both were college educated and in their thirties. Julia attended Oberlin College just two decades after Oberlin became the first American school to grant degrees to women. Ruth followed her mother to Oberlin but left after one semester to attend Buchtel College later called the University of Akron. Instead of graduating she spent a year traveling in the western United States where she wrote poetry and western fiction. When she returned to Ohio she took a job as a reporter. At the turn of the century newspaper work was not exclusively male terrain but a young woman reporter with career intentions was unusual. (LL)
