About the book >.>.> Creating a feeling of depth on the flat surface of cloth is challenging and exciting. I am especially fascinated by watching layers of dye and resist build a rich complex textured surface. Resist techniques take me back to my childhood when simple things brought on a sense of wonder and awe. Working with a resist-and seeing the pattern left behind after the resist is washed off-is almost like magic. A resist is simply a substance that blocks the penetration of dye. Applied directly to fabric before dyeing it results in an intriguing textured appearance. My fascination with resists began about eight years ago while I was experimenting with a number of paste resists. A few hours with flour paste and potato dextrin and I was hooked! I have since experimented with many organic materials and added a few man-made substances to my repertoire as well. While exploring the use of resists I found limited resources on the subject. There were a few books with a chapter on some of the resists. but nothing comprehensive. I have spent many hours experimenting over the past six years to perfect the techniques. My intention for this book is to share what I’ve learned to help shorten the learning curve. and to inspire others to experiment with resists. (LL)
