About the book >.>.> We were introduced by a mutual friend one blustery afternoon in early spring. It seemed a highly improbable match. He was much older a little frayed round the edges of the Old Empire. He was into rifles and shooting. And I well I wasn’t. But a spark was lit. I wrote the script for the BBC TV documentary and video in which he the National Rifle Association Bisley for short was the star. But the involvement didn’t end there. In the course of research the director Alex Leger pointed out that there was no definitive history no book which told the story of the NRA from the beginning until the present day. ‘What a marvellous picture book it would be. It wouldn’t need many words’ he said. I agreed. Dick Douglas-Boyd at Pelham Books thought otherwise. He liked pictures but what he really wanted was words 65000 of them. Immediately my home was under occupation. Bisley had moved in. Several months of blood sweat toil and 95000 words later The Queen’s Prize was born. On the face of it we remain an unlikely couple-but as in so many cases opposites can and do attract. Although Bisley has moved out of my home he will always have a place in my life and yes the old devil in my heart.
