About the book >.>.> The sea is integral to the art of Robert Jones. Most of his paintings are concerned with the sea its weather states shipping and its coastal landscape. As a figurative painter Jones’s principal enthusiasm is the look of sea and coast but his perceptive eye is supported by an extensive knowledge of all things marine the history of shipping and the lives of the seamen in one of the world’s most dangerous occupations. For many years he worked as the skipper of various inshore fishing vessels and came to know the coastal waters of his native Cornwall intimately. Despite his name he is a Cornishman and has lived for most of his life in Cornwall. His services to his native county have been recently been recognised in his election as a Bard of the Cornish Gorsedd. Jones combines his deep interest in maritime history with an equal interest in painters of the sea and ships. It was his dual fascination with both marine art and the history of seafaring that impelled him to write Alfred Wallis – Artist and Mariner (published in 2001) a percipient book in which he demonstrates that Wallis’s unique ‘memory paintings’ were based on first-hand experience. It was the same rare conjunction of interests that compelled Robert Jones to research and write this first book on the pierhead painter Reuben Chappell. In it he shows that Chappell possessed not only a complete understanding of the ships he was commissioned to paint but that he was also an artist of considerable stature; and that a pierhead portrait of a ship often denigrated by art historians could be both an historical record and a celebratory work of art. In similar fashion Robert Jones with art and seafaring in his blood has produced a compelling factual record that is also a valuable work of art history.
