About the book >.>.> This remarkable history of Somerset Fire Brigade illustrated with over 160 photographs ranges from the early postwar period right up to the present day covering the formation of local authority fire brigades in 1948 and the reorganization of 1974 and shows how advances in technology and rationalization have transformed the Brigade over the past five decades. The Somerset firefighters’ job has always been a demanding varied and often perilous one: called upon to deal with emergencies ranging from blaz- ing chemical factories to derailed trains they may also find themselves rescuing cows from slurry pits or damping down smouldering hill fires.
