About the book >.>.> In spite of its stellar success the nineteenth century mine was comparatively short lived by Cornish standards: From the commencement of activity at Gard’s Shaft in August 1844 until the pumps were stopped in 1902 was a mere fifty eight years. However during that fifty eight years Devon Great Consols’ prosperity set the mining world alight eclipsing even such Cornish copper giants as Carn Brea & Tincroft and South Caradon Mine. It is probable that the mine was in its hey day during the 1850s the largest copper producer in the world; it was certainly the largest arsenic producer. Between 1844 and 1902 737401 tons of copper bere were produced realising ?3360163 and 71607 tons of refined arsenic realising ?662285. That the mine generated great wealth is beyond question ?1232105 being divided between the shareholders whilst successive Dukes of Bedford received ?286372 in dues as Lords of the soil.
