About the book >.>.> The Shrewsbury and Hereford Railway “North and West! route ran on the western side and the Tenbury-Bewdley line lay to the south. Cutting across the triangle to the north of the Rea valley was the Much Wenlock branch Transport for the many farmers in the Rea Valley to and from the local livestock markets at Kidderminster. Tenbury Wells and Cleobury Mortimer was not convenient and the easing of this situation coupled with the opportunity of getting rail access to the Brown Clee dhustone sparked the idea to make a quarry railhead at Ditton Priors and link it to Cleobury Mortimer on the Great Western Railway bringing into being the line known as the Cleobury Mortimer and Ditton Priors Light Railway. The plan. no doubt became possible as a result of the 1896 Light Railway Act which altered the legal restrictions of existing Railway Acts so as to make it easier to build rural railways For the purpose of making and maintaining the railway and for the other purposes a company known as the “Cleobury Mortimer and Ditton Prior Ligh: Railway Company was formed. There were to be five directors which could be varied by the Company down to three or up to seven and the qualification of directors was that they must be in possession in their own right of not less than two hundred and fifty pounds in the share capital of the Company Following support from various informal meetings held in early 1900 Mr Everard Calthrop was engaged to survey and draw up plans and sections of the proposed route In May 1900 an application was duly made to the Light Railway Commissioners by Viscount Boyne and Admiral Robert Woodward in pursuance of the Light Railways Act 1896 for an Order to authorise the construction of the Light Railway A public enquiry was held in October 1900 at the Oddfellows Hall Cleobury Mortimer by the Earl of Jersey and Colonel Boughey. Board of Trade Light Railway Commissioners as to the expendiency of granting the application. The counsel for the promoters explained that there was practically no opposition from public bodies or landowners and expressed regret that on account of cost the railway could not be constructed nearer the centre of Cleobury Mortimer. The Engineer then explained the scheme in detail. Mr Williamson of Kinlet Mr Dodgson agent to Lord Boyne Mr Howells of Wheathill Court Mr Boyle Land Agent of Middieton. Mr Doolittle Estate Agent of Bewdley. Lord Boyne Admiral Woodward and Mr Davis. Chairman of Cleobury Mortimer District Council all signified to the Commissioners that they were in favour of the scheme. Mr G. Lloyd-Baker a land owner at Neen Savage was the only voice heard against the scheme as he felt it could inconvenience his tenantry without giving them any advantages.
