About the book >.>.> THE fate of the Great Northern Railway lines to Queensbury is a real reminder of how precious is our surviving railway network. In one sense at least the GN lines made a very positive contribution to railway preservation. It was after a visit to the abandoned GN line followed by a walk along the then British Railways operated Worth Valley line that determined one of the writers to strive to ensure that the same fate of indifference and neglect did not befall the short but steeply graded line to Oxenhope. The latter incidentally was of a much lower standard of construction the track being laid for example on ash ballast as opposed to the stone of the GN line. The writer’s determination to secure the line for preservation led to a meeting being called at the Temperance Hall in Keighley after closure of the line which was the start of the eventual successful preservation of the Keighley to Oxenhope branch. This book attempts to place on record the outstanding achievement made by the construction and operation of the Queensbury lines. They were too long too steep and had too many major civil engineering works for preservation like the Worth Valley branch but the inspiration for the latter certainly came from the former.
