About the book >.>.> Tristram Hillier (1905-1983) in his later years would reflect on the times of extraordinary change through which he and his contemporaries had lived. As a child early in the 20th century he had seen Louis Bl?riot’s flying machine appear high over the family’s Sussex garden and would try the patience of his nanny by insisting that they paused on London streets to take in the remarkable sight of motor cars. He experienced two World Wars and in different ways was profoundly affected by both of them and as a young artist he was caught up in the ‘tornado of conflicting influences’ that included Cubism and Surrealism. Georges Braque Andr? Masson and Edward Wadsworth were counted among his close friends. In important respects however he remained aloof from his world a man of faith in an age of politics a Roman Catholic in a Protestant land and someone who in the second half of his life retreated from the hedonism of his youth to an intense and creative solitude. Though he turned away from the overt Modernism of his early works he never abandoned its lessons. His mature art acknowledges its debt to Surrealism in a meticulous dreamlike depiction of reality and in flawless surfaces that hide unspoken and perplexing energies.
