About the book >.>.> The preface of a book is usually written by someone involved in its writing or linked with the events that it covers. I will break this rule but in an indirect way. In the summer of 2007 whilst on holiday in the Ukraine I came across a few photos of an artillery officer on a small local market. On the reverse of four of these prints were poems that the lieutenant had written for his mother. This officer’s bearing and his moustache suggested that he was from a noble family. The translation of his poems with their rich vocabulary confirmed that the officer was not just some ordinary Moujik. These verses also express what we Western Europeans call the “Slav Soul” a mixture of fervour joy and melancholy. These poems express the sadness at having left home behind missing family life a sense of worry at what returning home would be like and the joy of quickly getting the war over. I have therefore chosen to make these poems part of the preface along with the photos of this officer whose name sadly remains unknown The first poem is titled “My dear mother”. Philippe Rio “My dear mother your son sends his greetings from the front!
