About the book >.>.> These hills form part of the Blackdowns a still comparatively remote area of quiet charm a somewhat forgotten enclave of moorland deep high-hedged combes hard-to-find hamlets and isolated farms. The whole range is a prolongation of Exmoor and has many similar characteristics. Fronting north and east it roughly forms a letter ‘L’ with the angle filled in with numerous ridges and spurs rising to at its highest point Staple Hill 1035 feet above sea level. On its flanks lie the rich pasture lands of the vales of Exeter and Taunton. In spring the hills are bright with primroses violets and here and there a field of wild daffodils; in summer and autumn the brightness is maintained with golden gorse and purple heather.
