About the book >.>.> Throughout the period from the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837 until the middle of the 20th century railways and coal together were the foundation on which the industrial and commercial prosperity of Britain was built. The industrial revolution of the 18th century was based on water power. Water wheels drove the textile mills of Yorkshire and Lancashire and the forges and workshops of the Midlands while throughout much of the country a network of canals provided the means of heavy transport beyond the capacity of the horse and the inadequate roads of the time. The subsequent development and expansion of industry and commerce throughout Victoria’s long reign were based upon coal and the railway. Between 1831 and 1901 the population of Britain (excluding Ireland) more than doubled increasing from 16 million to 37 million; that of London by far the largest city had reached over 4% million by 1901. They travelled by steam train coal heated their houses hospitals and hotels brewed their beer baked their bread and fired their bricks and pottery. Coal was converted to gas and coke and dine chemical industry.
