About the book >.>.> No doubt inspired by his younger brother Will an RFC observer who had been shot down in France (1) Lawrence worked closely with the squadrons in the desert. In this way in 1916 using his sketch-map and notes two seaplanes from HMS Raven bombed a Turkish position near Yenbo. (2) For communications he used a pigeon service; cane-cages containing the birds were dropped to him in the desert and apart from occasional casualties – when pigeon-pie featured on the menu – his messages invariably got through. 3 Lawrence described one low-flying attack against the Turkish aerodrome at Maan when a bomb in the General’s kitchen finished off the cook and the breakfast. With patched-up wings the squadron returned to bomb the Turkish lines and despite intense infantry fire obtained a direct hit on a Field Battery. According to the Australian official history the pilots were crafty veterans who made the Germans in their superior planes hesitate before flying over the British lines. In September 1918 a swarm of RFC bombing planes bombed Deraa railway station while Lawrence’s forces advanced round the station by the north. 4 When news arrived of Allenby’s breakthrough Lawrence flew to Headquarters where the General sketched out his final attack against Damascus. Lawrence explained that ‘everything was being wrecked by air-impotence and bowh his camel bad
