About the book >.>.> Frank Selwyn Macaulay Bennett appointed Dean of Chester in 1920 within a few months of his 54th birthday is remembered in accounts of the Church of England in the twentieth century principally for the reforms he effected at Chester Cathedral during his 17 years as Dean and for the impact these re- forms had on the other Anglican cathedrals of England and Wales. One by one the others followed Chester’s example in abolishing entry charges and generally in making the cathedral church more welcoming and open to visitors. Bennett has not been forgotten. The best brief account of his work at Chester and its significance is given in Roger Lloyd’s The Church of England 1900-1965 (1966).’ A concise summary of important aspects can be found in the Victoria County History of Cheshire (vol. III 1980). Elma Paget widow of Bishop Paget of Chester in her memoir of her husband (1939) offered some impressions of relations between bishop and dean.
