About the book >.>.> A lumber magnate and the Art Institute’s single greatest patron. Ryerson recognized the importance of rare textiles and understood the role they play in the historic technical and stylistic evo- lution of art. Several of Ryerson’s remarkable gifts are included here (see PP. 22-23. 32 34). Some of these he acquired on a visit to Europe in 1894. from which he returned with hundreds of textiles. On another trip. Ryerson was accompanied by Chicago indus- trialist and museum trustee Edward E. Ayer who also collected textiles but gave them to the Industrial Art Division of Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History. In 1906 the Field Museum abolished the section and following Ryerson’s recommendation transferred Ayer’s textiles to the Art Institute which purchased them the following year.
