About the book >.>.> The heart of Eastern culture still remains obscure to many people of Western civilization today. Few realize for example the importance of art embroi- dery and the fiber arts in the Orient or how those media are closely interconnected with the history culture customs and fine art of its countries. It may be surprising to learn that embroidery is ranked among the most important art forms of the East. The tradition reaches back into remotest an- tiquity back to the China of prehistory back to the simple village communities of the Neolithic Yellow River Valley before the fabulous kingdoms and empires of the great dynasties began. It may be more surprising to discover that when one of the oldest known European embroideries appeared. the Bayeux Tapestry (which is not a tapestry at all but embroidered linen) in AD 1070 silk embroidery had already been practiced in China for at least 3000 years! Because of this many authorities have attributed the origin of the embroiderer’s art to China and surmised its spread from there to other parts of the world although there are Egyptian examples that are extremely early. Certainly early China was one of the first countries to develop embroidery into an ad- vanced art form and this creative upsurgence was naturally an outgrowth of the Chinese discovery of silk.
