About the book >.>.> In early 2000 I received a telephone call from the artist Bridget Riley who asked whether I ever thought about Paul Klee. It turned out he was much in her mind and she told me in that of Robert Kudielka Professor of Aesthetics and Philosophy of Art at the Universit?t der K?nste Berlin who had given a series of twenty-four lectures on Klee enquiring into the coherence of his approach. They both had an idea they wanted to share and within a few days the Hayward’s Head of Exhibitions Martin Caiger Smith and I were in Bridget’s studio being treated by Robert and Bridget to a slide presentation of Klee’s work. It showed us the Klee we knew – one of the most imagin ative artists of the twentieth century; the playfulness and enchantment so readily as sociated with his work were evident but surprisingly and more to the fore was a rigor ous and analytical artist. Bridget and Robert somehow put us inside Paul Klee’s head. revealing how he moved unceasingly and deliberately between abstraction and figur ation through an intense engagement with the tools of picture-making-line colour tone rhythm balance. Klee’s deliberate deployment of these means and his unparal leled experimentation with them created some of the most inspiring pictures of our time. This multi-track formal analysis of Klee’s work has provided a clear and at the same time rich and complex set of directions for the exhibition at the Hayward Gallery exhibitions in Britain. (MP)
