About the book >.>.> Indifferent to the tags attached to his work Giorgio de Chirico has always considered himself a painter in the grand tradition of the Old Masters a classical painter in fact. And it is his classicism that his wife Isabella Far stresses again and again in her sensitive reflections on her husband’s work. But De Chirico’s classicism is classicism with a difference. The child of Italian parents De Chirico spent his formative years in Greece and absorbed the Hellenic genius on the very site of its development. His educa- tion began in Athens and continued in Munich where he read Schopenhauer Weininger and Nietzsche while pursuing studies in art. The introspective trend of his interests betrays itself in his preference for the nostalgically mood-drenched canvases of Arnold B?cklin (another devotee of the classical past) and of his pupil Max Klinger. The painting of Giorgio de Chirico is most often regarded as a major bridge between the romantic fantasy of much late-nineteenth-century work and the Dada/Surrealist synthesis that has occupied much of the twentieth century. While the artist did lay down precedents for Surrealist iconography the most remarkable aspect of his work as the critic William S. Rubin has remarked is its relation to the art of Renaissance Italy and ancient Greece. This book focuses on his classically oriented metaphysical ap- proach to painting and his intense interest in redis- covering and reviving the painterly techniques of the past. (OS)
