The Shipwright Annual con- tinues the journal’s principle of publishing articles by modelmakers for modelmakers reproducing photo- graphs of their work in full colour as well as introducing articles by maritime historians on broader topics associ- ated with research ship design and construction. The second edition of Shipwright opens with an exclu- sive interview with Peter Goodwin Keeper and Curator of HMS Victory in which he discusses the complexities of maintaining a historic vessel and the ongoing research to create a realistic interpretation of a working ship in 1805. This is followed by an impressive selection of articles that cover static and working models on subjects ranging from antiquity to the twentieth century and discussing the tech- nical challenges overcome. General articles include George Stephenson’s exami- nation of archival letters and documents to reveal the life of an eighteenth-century dockyard apprentice; Wyn Davies’ article on a major project to replace the timber decking on HMS Warrior; and Douglas Brooks describes the sengokubune-traditional ships of the Japanese coastal trade and presents a shipwright committed to recreating them. In the anniversary year of Scott’s and Amundsen’s legendary journeys to the South Pole it is fitting that Rorke Byan’s article looks at Fram and Discovery two ships specifically designed for polar exploration. And the Annual is rounded off with the Book News section with reviews of the year’s modelling and maritime titles. (MP)
