About the book >.>.> My remembered earth is the Quantocks. I must have first seen the hills over the side of a high pram in 1933 well before my conscious recollections began. But in childhood and schooldays their presence was a constant theme. My home like almost all the Haggett forebears I can trace lay at the northern end of the Polden Hills in central Somerset. From the low rise of Gaunts Hill-ieself a low ‘island’ rising from the Somerset Levels – there across the great meander sweeps of the River Parrett lay a wilder landscape which beckoned and demanded to be explored. For most seasons of the year the sun set behind the range of the Quantock Hills and from my attic bedroom I could see their undulating dark blue profile like the flat of a stage set marking my western horizon. Time spent in that western hill country was one of the joys of my schooldays: walking. cycling fossil-hunting dam building and camping (permits from the Forestry Commission and the Fairfield Estate office were readily given). This pleasure even extended into my university years at Cambridge. A foxed copy of a second- year dissertation is a reminder that after pouring over old maps in the Somerset County Archives (then held in the old Taunton Shire Hall) (LL)
