About the book >.>.> The history of the Underground Railroad has always fascinated me. In my classes I’ve often spoken of the history hidden in quilts such as the way a Log Cabin block was used to signal a “safe house” for runaway slaves. When I found a book called Hidden in Plain View by Jacqueline Tobin and Raymond Dobard Ph.D. I learned that certain quilt blocks were possibly used as a code to guide slaves to freedom. In 1994 Jacqueline Tobin met a woman named Ozella McDaniel Williams from South Carolina who told her that quilts were used to communicate information about the Underground Railroad. She remembered the code this way: “The monkey wrench turns the wagon wheel toward Canada on a bear’s paw trail to the crossroads. Once they got to the crossroads they dug a log cabin on the ground. Shoofly told them to dress up in cotton and satin bow ties go to the cathedral church get married and exchange double wedding rings. Flying geese stay on the drunkard’s path and follow the stars.
