About the book >.>.> Then in 1878 Benjamin Disraeli Earl W of Beaconsfield visited Hertford House and signed Sir Richard Wallace’s Visitors’ Book “Beaconsfield in this palace of genius fancy and taste” he was reflecting the overwhelming impact that this almost unbelievably rich collection has had on so many visitors to the Wallace Collection then and now. Remarkable among the great museums of the world for the very high overall quality of its collections al for their extraordinarily wide scope and variety the Wallace Collection is perhaps inevitably best known for its un- parallelled collections of French 18th-century paintings sculptures and decorative arts and for its wonderful European Old Master paintings. The fact that beyond specialists it is less well-known as a great collection of European and Oriental arms and armour does not in any sense imply that these collections are less significant within the context of the Collection as a whole. Indeed in terms of numbers of objects arms and armour makes up the largest single part accounting for more than forty per cent of the 5500 works of argin the Wallace Collection. (MP)
