About the book >.>.> Chinese medicine is a cultural phenomenon. To understand it and to use it properly you must first acquire a thorough familiarity with its cul- tural background. Only thus can its deeper meanings be fully assimi- lated and appreciated. Without investigating and considering its cultural substrate the the- ories and methods of Chinese medicine lose their multidimensionality and become quaint-even bizarre-artifacts. In the hands of those who lack such understanding the medical methods and substances do not function effectively. Interest in Chinese medicine has dramatically increased in the past several decades. Schools of acupuncture have sprung up around the world. Yet for the most part the curriculum in these schools stresses technical and mechanical considerations leaving the cultur matrix the living root of Chinese traditional medicine under- or unrepresented. This is understandable for many reasons. China has only recently reopened its doors to foreigners to provide for the first time in a half- century greater access to the archives and more importantly the living experience of traditional Chinese culture. To be sure Chinese culture has experienced a lengthy diaspora resulting in overseas Chinese com- munities around the world. In these enclaves Chinese traditional medi- cine has been steadily practiced but for the most part confined to Chi- nese and other Asians for whom the cultural aspects of Chinese medi- cine pose fewer problems.
